Contour (Composite) bonding is a cosmetic dentistry technique that can correct minor imperfections and transform a smile in just one visit. Among the cosmetic procedures where it is used are the following:
Closing gaps between teeth
Repairing chipped and broken teeth
Smile makeovers (direct composite veneers)
Reshaping teeth
The procedure involves placing composite resin on the teeth to be treated and carefully sculpting the material to fill in holes or gaps. Composite resin is available in a wide range of shades and translucency and can be matched to your teeth to give a final result with a natural appearance. The procedure begins by roughening and etching the surface of the tooth to make it ready to receive the composite material. The composite resin is applied in thin layers to achieve the desired shade, outline shape and translucency. A curing light is used to activate the material causing it to set and harden. The last step is to polish the tooth to create the final shape and achieve a smooth finish.
In most cases the procedure can be accomplished in just one appointment and often does not require the use of an anaesthetic.
Contour bonding is a relatively inexpensive treatment that does not involve the reduction of a tooth structure. It is not as durable or strong as a veneer or crown and may require some further rework or to be replaced at some future date.
Good oral hygiene is vital to maintain the result and daily brushing and flossing is advised. Composites may stain more quickly than surrounding teeth and regular cleaning by a hygienist is recommended.
