Extractions

Teeth may require extraction for many reasons; perhaps they have decayed or broken beyond repair, be periodontically involved or have to be removed to accomodate orthodontic adjustment.

We adopt atraumatic extraction procedures that are designed to minimise the damage caused to bone, diminish pain and shorten the healing period.

The extraction process can range from straightforward extraction to surgical extraction where teeth are impacted or have complex root structures.

After surgery liquids should be taken first and patients should avoid eating on the side of the extraction.

Some bleeding should be expected after the extraction and where it occurs patients are recommended to bite down on gauze for intervals of thirty minutes. Should bleeding persist then we should be contacted for further advice and attention.

Swelling is normal and is part of the healing process. During the first 36 hours immediately after extraction ice-packs can be used to reduce swelling. After this time heat is more effective.
