Laser Dentistry

Dental lasers are used for surgery, for early detection of dental decay, to promote healing and to remove tooth structure for elimination of disease and restoration – different lasers for different procedures. Lasers require eye protection. Safety glasses with special lenses will be provided. Family and guests in the dental operatory at the time of your laser treatment may also be asked to wear protective eyeglasses. We use the following lasers:

Caries detection laser. The Diagnodent is a laser that is used to scan each tooth for early signs of caries (tooth decay). Clinical studies show the device to be 90% accurate in detecting decay compared to the 50-60% accuracy observed with x-rays. A key benefit of the device is that it allows the use of minimally invasive techniques so that the maximum tooth structure is preserved. Our hygenist uses the Diagnodent as a routine part of our prevention programme.

Diode laser. The Sirolaser enables surgical procedures to be carried out without some of the unwanted surgical effects. Because the laser stops bleeding, as well as sealing lymphatic and nerve ending, it reduces the inflammation and discomfort associated with surgical procedures. This laser is used cosmetically to reshape gums so that gummy smiles can be enhanced or improved aesthetics can obtained by improving the symmetry of gums. Periodontic procedures can be carried by removing infected tissue and killing bacteria in periodontal pockets.

Low Level Laser Therapy. The Oralase offers a proven, drug free solution to eliminate pain and accelerate soft and hard tissue repair. Over 325 dental research studies report the positive effects of low level laser therapy in more than 90% of the trials. The device illuminates an area to deliver low levels of laser energy to promote healing. The Oralase can be used to reduce the pain associated with dental procedures such as toothache, extraction or muscle tenderness.
